Improving Students' Understanding of Conditional Sentence Type I by Using Substitution Drills (A Classroom Action Research)

Absract
This research is aimed to know the improvement of students’ understanding of conditional sentence type 1 by using substitution drills, it consists of: (1) the improvement of students’ understanding in mastering form of conditional sentence type 1 by using substitution drills, (2) the improvement of students’ motivation in learning conditional sentence type 1 by using substitution drills, and (3) the different achievement of students at SMK Islamiyah Ciputat in learning conditional sentence type 1 with or without using substitution drills. Moreover, this research is a classroom action research and it used the quantitative and qualitative design.
The finding of the research stated that students’ understanding in mastering the conditional sentence type 1 is more improved than before. Their motivations are also improved after using substitution drills in class. Those are proved by the result of questioners and the improvement of students’ percentage from pretest to posttest1 and posttest 2. It shows that there 15.92% improvement from pretest to posttest and 71.05% improvement from posttest 1 to posttest 2.
Based on the finding above, it can be suggested it would be better for teacher to use substitution drills in teaching conditional sentence type 1

Adverbs of Frequency

Dalam bahasa Inggris kita menggunakan adverb of frequency untuk menyatakan tingkat kebiasaan alias keseringan kita melakukan sesuatu hal. Adverb sendiri bermakna kata keterangan bersama frequency berarti keseringan. Contoh kata adverb of frequency adalah always (selalu), usually (biasanya), normally/generally (secara umum), often/frequently (sering), sometimes (kadang-kadang), occasionally (adakalanya), seldom (jarang), hardly ever/rarely (hampir tidak pernah), bersama never (tidak pernah).

Setidaknya kita beroleh membagi ke tiga bagian mengenai posisi adverb of frequency:

1. Posisi Adverb of Frequency sebelum kata kerja utama (main verb).

Contoh kata kerja utama (main verb) yaitu semua bentuk kata kerja yg menjadi kata kerja inti dalam sebuah kalimat (sentence).

2. Posisi Adverb of Frequency setelah kata to be.

Contoh to be yaitu: is, are, am, was, were.

3. Posisi adverb of Frequency setelah kata modal.

PENGECUALIAN:

Ada beberapa kata dari adverb of frequency yg bisa terletak di awal kalimat. Contoh kata adverb of frequency yg bisa terletak di awal kalimat yaitu: usually, normally, often, frequently, sometimes, occasionally

• Usually, I drink milk before going to bed.
• Occasionally, I eat noodles.

Kata-kata adverb of frequency yg lain: always, seldom, rarely, hardly, ever, never tidak boleh kita gunakan di awal kalimat (sentence). 

Penggunaan hardly ever bersama never tidak boleh dalam kata kerja yg negatif. Hardly ever bersama never sudah masuk dalam kategori negtif sehingga dalam kalimat tidak perlu lagi menggunakan kata kerja negatif. Contoh:

• I hardly ever don't sing for public. (incorrect/salah)
• I hardly ever sing for public. (correct/benar)
• I never don't eat bacon. (false/salah)
• I never eat bacon. (true/betul)

Kecuali penggunaak kata ever (pernah), boleh kita gunakan dalam kalimat negatif bersama pertanyaa (question).

Ada beberapa ungkapan (expression) yg juga beroleh mengatakan seberapa sering kita melakukan sesuatu.

Contohnya: - every day - once a month - twice a year - four times a day - every other week.
